The Fort Smith Board of Directors is asking for a pause in planning on a water transmission line project and a water rate study. The Fort Smith Board of Directors called a special meeting Wednesday to discuss a new state law that could require the board to raise water rates. Director Lavon Morton requested a pause on planning for a project that would bring water from Lake Fort Smith to Chaffee Crossing via a water line. The directors will vote on this pause at the next board meeting. Under Act 605, if any city has a water project that costs more than 20% of system revenues, then the city has to have a water rate study, which would determine how much the city would have to raise its water rates.
