In Fort Smith, Little Rock, Fayetteville and West Memphis, Arkansas State Police traffic enforcement ramps up for the Fourth of July holiday travel period. More drivers than ever are expected on the roadways, despite recent record-setting gasoline prices. With the price of a gallon of regular unleaded dropping a few cents a few days before the travel period starts, trips may be closer to home, but highways will be crowded. Fourth of July, Independence Day, is a Monday this year. Fort Smith police have announced extra efforts to enforce impaired driving on streets with random sobriety checkpoints.
